About Nicky Ellis, LMSW:
Nicky is a licensed therapist with a supportive and collaborative approach utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as well as integrating mindfulness-based perspectives. She has a warm nurturing style working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, bereavement issues and individuals going through challenging life transitions.
Nicky recognizes that everyone has their personal beliefs and narratives that may prevent them from being the best version of themselves. She strives to identify thoughts and behaviors that may be ineffective in order to help set goals and improve overall well-being. She also has experience working with issues related to aging and intellectual disabilities.
Education & Experience:
Nicky completed her MSW at New York University in 1995. She spent the early part of her career in a long-term care facility in the Bronx working with older adults with a focus on palliative and hospice care. She worked on an interdisciplinary team to help clients achieve their therapeutic goals. She organized groups for residents with memory care issues and support groups for their families. Studying geriatric care management at Hunter College, she provided elder care to families with seniors struggling to age in place.
Nicky also worked as a program director for Career Gear in NYC, a non-profit organization that supports men re-entering the workforce. She ran life skills workshops and support groups to cope with the lifestyle changes that come with achieving financial independence and helped them to adapt to new roles in the family system as well as cope with the stress that often arises when finding a work-life balance.
Recently, Nicky has been an advocate for the special needs population, particularly with families with children with intellectual disabilities.
